While the Avi Vest product increases your odds against being buried in an avalanche, there’s no better protection than common sense and adherence to a few key guidelines:
- Always carry an avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe with your Avi Vest.
- Avoid being caught in an avalanche! If you are caught, immediately pull your rip cord and try to ride out of the avalanche.
- Always ride one at a time and watch each other when you are in avalanche terrain
- Check your avalanche advisory and ask pros about conditions in the backcountry.
- Take a course, read, and learn as much as you can.
- Don't go into the backcountry alone. You might need your buddy for help.
- Be wary around avalanche starting zones; ski cutting is good form.
- Try to avoid terrain traps and exposure to cliffs or trees.
